Een voorbeeld van puur intellectuele verwondering zou het volgende kunnen zijn. Iemand legt mij enkele wetten van de erfelijkheid uit en beschrijft hoe de erfelijke aanleg op het nageslacht wordt overgedragen. Nu is aanleg een moeilijk begrip. We zouden kunnen zeggen: wat in aanleg bestaat, bestaat niet of maar op beperkte wijze. Het bestaan van een aanleg is pas te constateren, wanneer die aanleg is verwezenlijkt en dus geen aanleg meer is.

Die aanleg bestaat wel: erfelijke aanleg is een boodschap, een bericht, dat in een bepaalde code wordt overgeseind.

"It is these chromosomes that contain in some kind of code-script the entire pattern of the individual's future development and of its functioning in the mature state. Every complete set of chromosomes contains the full code. The term code-script is, of course, too narrow. The
chromosome structures are at the same time instrumental in bringing about the development they foreshadow. They are law-code and executive power - or, to use another simile, they

De wetenschap blijkt in staat te zijn die code te ontcijferen en daarmee een geheim van de natuur in haar macht te krijgen. Maar bij de overbrenging van het bericht kan een storing optreden, die in de informatie-leer ‘ruis’ wordt genoemd. De ruis beïnvloedt het bericht en daarmee de erfelijkheid op een bepaalde wijze, die nog niet te doorgronden schijnt te zijn.

"Deconstructionists will tell you that no two readers of a text will come up with the same reading, and something similar is undoubtedly true when we consider the relationship between a genome and the embryonic environment in which it has its informational effects." (Dennett 1995, Darwin's Dangerous Idea, p. 113)

En dat is al genoeg; dan gebeurt het met mij. Ik word helemaal duizelig en enthousiast van de perspectieven die zich hier openen. Er gaat iets leven dat nog nooit geleefd heeft, een hele provincie van mijn onverschilligheid komt in heftige beroering. Niet alleen verschijnt er plotseling een helder licht boven een vitale kwestie als de erfelijkheid nu blijkt te zijn. Maar er zijn nieuwe sleutelwoorden in mijn denken binnengeworpen: bericht, informatie, ruis. In mijn enthousiasme zie ik nu niet alleen de erfelijkheid in het licht van de informatie, maar alles zonder meer. Alles is informatie.

"Tekst, beeld, spraak, communicatie, vriendschap, liefde en haat zij gedigitaliseerde databestanden. Wie daarbuiten zoekt naar iets onberekenbaars, iets geestelijks, iets emotioneels, iets cultureels, die zoekt vergeefs." (Oudemans 2007, Echte Filosofie, p. 16)

Alles wat is, is kenbaar inzoverre het is en mededeelbaar inzoverre het kenbaar is. Informatie is de structuur van het zijnde. Als alles anders is, ligt de boodschap van het hoe-zijn van dat anders-zijn al in de vorm van een te ontcijferen informatie in de dingen opgesloten. Niets is zo enthousiasmerend als de kenbaarheid van de dingen. Al mijn weten en denken wordt in een panische bedrijvigheid onder dit nieuwe gezichtspunt omgezet, omvergewoeld en hierop gericht. Alles verandert en neemt een nieuwe structuur aan; alles moet worden herzien. Maar alles is ook ruis, onvoorspelbaarheid, onkenbaarheid. Dingen zijn samengeklonterde stukjes ruis of, naar de oude theorie van Epicurus en zijn school, atomen die van de rechte lijn in de vrije val zijn afgeweken en tot ondoorzichtige massa's zijn geworden.
   Datzelfde kan gebeuren onder weer andere gezichtspunten, wanneer ik bereid ben mij telkens opnieuw te laten schokken.

On the one hand we have words such as chaos, disorder, and entropy. On the other hand we have terms like order, organization, information and complexity. Life is not just a genetic entity. Genes by themselves do nothing more than salt crystals. Life is an open, cycling system organized by the laws of thermodynamics." (Schneider & Sagan 2005, Into the Cool, pp. xi-24)

Uitstel van executie

"Why life? Does life, scientifically viewed, have an overall function? Our answer is yes. A barometric pressure gradient in the atmosphere, the difference between high- and low-pressure masses, leads to a tornado, a complex cycling system. The tornado's function, its purpose, is to eliminate the gradient. Life has a similar natural purpose. Only instead of quickly destroying a pressure gradient and then disappearing, it tends to reduce, over billions of years, the huge solar gradient between hot sun and cold space, growing in complexity as it does so. The growth of complex, intelligent life can be directly traced to the effectiveness of life as a cycling material system adept at reducing gradients.
